Another claim to fame that Granville Island possesses is its community of houseboats that make up the Sea Village. The concept that this type of community can be an integral part of the downtown of a world urban centre is unique. This speaks volumes to the fact that in Vancouver the downtown is not the sole reserve of the business and commerce communities but is also home to approximately 150,000 people within a radius of 2-3 kilometers from the centre of downtown. The Sea Village is a symbol of the diversity of lifestyles within this area.
